Income Tax Department Launches Foreign Assets Information (FAI) Report on Compliance Portal

Foreign Assets Information Report Now Available on AIS Portal

The Income Tax Department has introduced the Foreign Assets Information (FAI) report on the AIS Compliance Portal, giving taxpayers greater visibility into foreign financial information received from overseas jurisdictions. The facility is particularly relevant for Indian residents with foreign bank accounts, investments or other reportable financial interests.

What Is the Foreign Assets Information Report?

The FAI report allows taxpayers to securely access foreign financial information received by the Indian tax authorities under international information-exchange frameworks, including the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) and FATCA.

According to the Income Tax Department's update dated 20 July 2026, taxpayers can view their Foreign Asset Information through the Annual Information Statement (AIS). The Department has also hosted a note specifically concerning the availability of CRS/FATCA information in AIS.

Information is available for Calendar Year 2022 onwards.

What Information Can the FAI Report Contain?

The report may provide details such as:

  • Foreign financial account information
  • Account balances
  • Dividend income
  • Interest income
  • Gross proceeds
  • Other reportable financial payments
  • Details relating to the reporting financial institution and jurisdiction

Because this is sensitive financial information, the report is provided as a password-protected PDF rather than being displayed directly on the portal.

How Can Taxpayers Access the Report?

Taxpayers can generally access the facility through the AIS section of the Income Tax e-Filing portal:

  1. Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
  2. Access the Annual Information Statement (AIS).
  3. Open the Compliance Portal.
  4. Go to the "Reports" section.
  5. Select "Foreign Assets Information".
  6. Choose the relevant Calendar Year.
  7. Download the password-protected PDF.

The information currently covers Calendar Year 2022 onwards.

What Should Taxpayers Do After Downloading It?

The FAI report should be treated as an important reconciliation document, particularly before filing an income-tax return.

Taxpayers should:

  • Compare foreign account details with their own bank and investment records.
  • Verify reported dividends, interest and gross proceeds.
  • Check whether foreign assets have been appropriately disclosed in the applicable income-tax return.
  • Reconcile relevant information with disclosures such as Schedule FA and Schedule FSI, wherever applicable.
  • Investigate information that does not belong to them or appears incorrect.

If a discrepancy is identified, taxpayers can submit feedback through the Compliance Portal using the Transaction Sequence Number (TSN) provided in the FAI report. The facility is intended to help taxpayers identify and communicate discrepancies in the information available with the Department.

Why the FAI Report Matters

The introduction of the FAI facility represents a significant step towards greater transparency in international tax reporting. Taxpayers can now compare information received by the Income Tax Department from foreign jurisdictions with their own records and tax disclosures.

This is especially important for taxpayers who have overseas bank accounts, foreign securities, investment accounts or other foreign financial interests. Reviewing the report promptly can help identify inconsistencies before they develop into larger compliance issues.

Conclusion

Taxpayers with foreign financial interests should regularly review their FAI report and reconcile it with their tax records and return disclosures. Where information is incorrect or does not relate to the taxpayer, the TSN-based feedback mechanism provides a channel to flag the discrepancy.
